Dutch photographer and artist. Banning was born in the Netherlands from Dutch-East-Indies parents. He studied social and economic history at the Radboud University Nijmegen, and has been working as a photographer since 1981. A central theme of Banning's practice is state power, having produced series about the long-term consequences of war and the world of government bureaucracy.

IMAGINATION
The photographs in ‘Imagination’ are Jan Banning’s photographic interpretations of the Christina Boyer case, created during the course of his investigations. Some are documentary, because – however subjectively photographed – they ‘depict’ an existing reality. Others are visual constructs: recreations, based on research into source material, or on Christina’s descriptions and recollections, or a combination of the two.

De foto’s in ‘Verbeelding’ zijn Jan Bannings fotografische interpretaties van de zaak Christina Boyer, ontstaan in de loop van het onderzoek. Sommige zijn documentair, omdat ze – hoe subjectief ook gefotografeerd – een bestaande werkelijkheid ‘afbeelden’. Andere foto’s zijn visuele constructies: ensceneringen, gebaseerd op bronnenonderzoek, op beschrijvingen en herinneringen van Christina, of op combinaties van beide.
