Dutch photographer and artist. Banning was born in the Netherlands from Dutch-East-Indies parents. He studied social and economic history at the Radboud University Nijmegen, and has been working as a photographer since 1981. A central theme of Banning's practice is state power, having produced series about the long-term consequences of war and the world of government bureaucracy.

What this photo invoked was a sense of dreariness. The fence is the first thing I noticed, of course. I wonder if it is somehow trying desperately (like the South tries) to hold on to a simpler, more innocent time. And hold the rest of the world at bay. There’s such a contrast between the times depicted in the picture of Gone with the Wind and real life. The South likes to think of itself as laid back, genteel, hospitable. But of course I know a much different Georgia: one that’s so cold, merciless, and unforgiving, and holding on to a penal colony mentality.
The NY Strip 499 jumps out at me because I’d love a steak right now. So many women around here say they dream of sex and the like… I dream of eating a dinner of steak, baked potato, broccoli with cheese, a huge salad. Funny how even my dreams differ from a lot of people in here. I imagine we all dream of freedom. But of different… very different things in that freedom.
Wat deze foto opriep, was een gevoel van somberheid. Het eerste wat me opviel, natuurlijk, was dat hek. Ik vraag me af of dat op de een of andere manier wanhopig probeert (zoals The South poogt) zich vast te klampen aan een eenvoudiger, onschuldiger tijd. En de rest van de wereld op afstand houdt. Er is zo’n contrast tussen de tijd die wordt afgebeeld op de afbeelding van ‘Gone with the Wind’ en het echte leven. The South beschouwt zichzelf graag als relaxed, deftig, gastvrij. Maar ik ken natuurlijk een heel ander Georgia: een dat koud, meedogenloos en genadeloos is en dat vasthoudt aan de mentaliteit van een strafkolonie.
De NY Strip 499 springt eruit omdat ik nu vreselijk graag een biefstuk zou eten. Zoveel vrouwen hier zeggen dat ze dromen van seks en dergelijke… Ik droom van het eten van een maaltijd met biefstuk, gebakken aardappels, broccoli met kaas, een enorme salade. Grappig hoe zelfs mijn dromen verschillen van die van veel mensen hier. Ik stel me voor dat we allemaal dromen van vrijheid. Maar van verschillende… heel verschillende dingen binnen die vrijheid.
