ASSOCIATIONS

‘Associations’ presents combinations of Jan Banning’s documentary photographs of the American South accompanied by texts from Christina. Banning sent her photographs of her surroundings, invisible to her through the prison walls. If these evoked an emotional response in her, she wrote it down. This provides us with insights into her inner world, showing how life imprisonment influences her perception of the visual world.

Christina herself says of this: ‘This environment changes our perceptions of the world around us. Let’s take a simple necklace, for instance. Most people think of it as simple adornment for their body, a fashion accessory. I wear one, my cross. But I wear it on the inside of my clothes where it can’t be seen. The reason is that it is a potential threat to me. I have seen people be choked with a necklace.’

Associaties

‘Associaties’ presenteert combinaties van Bannings documentaire foto’s uit The South met teksten van Christina. Hij stuurde haar foto’s toe van de voor haar onzichtbare omgeving. Als ze een emotionele reactie bij haar opriepen, zette zij die op papier. Zo biedt ze inzicht in haar innerlijke wereld en toont zij hoe levenslange opsluiting haar perceptie van de visuele wereld beïnvloedt.

Zelf zegt Christina hierover: ‘Deze omgeving verandert onze waarneming van de wereld om ons heen. Neem bijvoorbeeld een eenvoudige halsketting. De meeste mensen beschouwen die als een simpele versiering van hun lichaam, een modeaccessoire. Ik draag er een, mijn kruis. Maar ik draag het aan de binnenkant van mijn kleren waar het niet te zien is. De reden is dat het een potentiële bedreiging voor mij is. Ik heb mensen gewurgd zien worden met een halsketting.’
