Bureaucratics exhibition in Kazakhstan

On February 17, “Bureaucratics” opened in Astana, Kazachstan, in the Contemporary Art Center Kulanshi. The exhibition was organized by the Dutch embassy. The opening attracted an impressive number of visitors, the big majority of them young people. For my presentation, the next morning – with an outside temperature of minus 27 degrees Celsius – the gallery had put up some 40 seats in a small meeting room.  By the time I started, 110 attendants had shown up. I had the impression that the the idea behind the series – the slightly ironic perspective on state authorities and institutes – was not lost on these Kazakh visitors.

The exhibition in Astana ends on March 24, 2011. There are plans to then move it to Almati and show it there.

The price of the book is € 60 (plus transport costs).

Documentary “BECAUSE WE WERE BEAUTIFUL” at film festival in USA

The film documentary “Because we were beautiful”, about Indonesian Comfort Women (and our search for them) will be shown at the Big Muddy Film Festival, February 18-27, 2011 at the Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL (USA). It was made by by Frank van Osch and broadcast on Dutch national television, August 15, 2010.

Van Osch and his team accompanied Hilde Janssen and me during part of the search for these women. Apart from the film, this project resulted in the (Dutch language) text book “Schaamte en onschuld” (ISBN: 9789046807132) and the bilingual photo book “Comfort Women/Troostmeisjes“.

Launched at last year’s Visa Pour l’Image photojournalism festival, the FNAC Grants are worth €8000 each. For its inaugural edition, picture editors, including BJP‘s news editor Olivier Laurent (and Geo’s Ruth Eichhorn plus Newsweek’s Jamie Wellford, JB), were asked to nominate photographers working towards the completion of a personal project. The three finalists – Jan BanningCedric Gerbehaye and Anastasia Taylor-Lind – were selected from among the 46 proposed projects. Each will receive a €8000 grant, and will see their work shown at Visa Pour l’Image in August and September 2011. Their images will also form part of a touring exhibition across FNAC’s France-based stores.”
